What kind of exercise is Pilates?

Pilates is a well rounded, core focused, system of integrated excercise techniques created by Joseph Pilates in the 1950’s. More than just stretching and lengthening muscles Pilates is focused on fascial fibers, proprioceptive awareness of personal space and our alignment with the force of Gravity.

Mat Pilates was developed along with many apparatus taking the functional and foundational principles off the Mat and into the Reformer, Cadillac, Barrel and many more.

Apparatus was developed from hospital beds as a form of rehabilitation from injury.  Many apparatus consist of tension loaded springs, platforms, moving carriages and utilizing bars to assist and engage lengthening along the MyoFascial complexes of the body.

I’m not strong in my core, should I still try Pilates?

Absolutely! The Posture Consultant is trained in both Yogic Asana systems and Pilates and my professional opinion would be to train in Mat Pilates prior to any apparatus training and/or Yoga Asana training.

Pilates developes and strengthens the Core!
